The number of prisoners in Kengtung Prison has increased almost fivefold over the past 20 years. There are now over 1,800 inmates, including some 300 Catholics. This year, as in previous years, the parish priest and his youth group cooked enough vegetables and pork and chicken curry to provide a meal for all the inmates, bringing it on St Stephen's Day (26 Dec) and also singing carols for those who were interested (my guess is that was everyone who was allowed to come and listen). By prior arrangement, the costs this year were covered by St Mary's Warrington, with a little left over toward next time. God bless you!
Good eyes might spot on the satellite photo above the Immaculate Heart of Mary Cathedral (a green cross about 3cm SW of the blue dot), plus the square-U shaped Diocesan Pastoral Centre a further 1cm SW. Kengtung Prison can be seen 3cm NW of the blue dot--and it is getting fearfully crowded.
Below: photos from the impressive Catholic compound around the Cathedral, including St Joseph's chapel in the priest's quarters where we said Holy Mass on 30 December. The final photo is of the brave, energetic, humourful and holy Fr Norman Wu.
