The Golden Triangle was once the world's foremost producer of illegal opiates. Now it could become a source of immeasurable grace. Archbishop Emeritus Matthias U Shwe and three religious sisters are developing a Lourdes Grotto and a Divine Mercy cave as a place of pilgrimage for the region. Buddhist visitors were visibly moved and Catholics literally gasping with astonished delight at the palpable peace which reigns around the sanctuary and the whole settlement of Thein Phyan. There is a cave for perpetual adoration which reminds one of Bethlehem. And a long tunnel which only those who bow down may traverse leads to a chamber where 500 souls gathered for Holy Mass this Christmas. The Archangel Michael guards a more accessible entrance to the cave, skewering satan whose effigy looks most disgruntled. Thanks to Karuna (Myanmar's Caritas), the site also provides a home here for 25 blessed orphans.
