Former Political Prisoner returning to Burma
November 11, 2016
Fr James Mawdsley, FSSP will be returning to Burma (Myanmar) for two weeks after Christmas 2016. Having been ordained a priest in July 2016, Fr Mawdsley hopes to offer Holy Mass at Myanmar’s national shrine to Our Lady in Nyaunglebin and at a dozen more churches across the country. His intent is to give thanks for all the good God has done in Myanmar, and to ask for many further blessings for the population.

Fr Mawdsley spent three months in prison in Yangon in 1998 and then a further 14 months of solitary confinement in Kengtung for political protests. Happily the situation in Myanmar is greatly improved since then. In Yangon in 2014, for the first time Fr Mawdsley was able to meet Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Min Ko Naing, in support of whom Fr Mawdsley had long campaigned. No less moving, in Kengtung he was re-united with Fr Norman Wu for the first time since 2000, when Fr Wu twice visited Mawdsley in prison to offer Holy Mass.

On his 2014 visit, Fr Mawdsley gave money to schools, orphanages, a leper colony, a prison and the dioceses he visited. He will be deeply grateful to anyone willing to donate funds so that he can give more to similar projects during this December 2016 - January 2017 visit. To do so, please contact him here or click here to give through Paypal, quoting ‘Burma appeal’ as a reference.
