Good Friday, Stations of the Cross at 12 noon... And photos from Palm Sunday
March 22, 2016
Please join us if you can for Solemn Stations of the Cross at 12noon on Good Friday.
The Stations at St Mary's are fine works of art, moving the attentive soul. They are carved from Caen stone (famously used for Canterbury Cathedral, the Tower of London, and Buckingham Palace) and were commissioned by Father Wilfrid Sumner, OSB, who was rector here from 1883 to 1896 and responsible for majority of the carvings within the church. At that time, the Franciscan Order held the exclusive right to install such stations, as they are originally the idea of St Francis of Assisi, conceived as a safe substitute for pilgrimages to the Holy land, which at the time was a dangerous place to travel. St Francis also conceived the idea of the Christmas Crèche. The full set of stations at St Mary's were completed and solemnly blessed by Fr Michael, OSF, on March 1st, 1896.
