St. Mary's Priory Church, is recognised as having one of the leading church choirs in the North West. The choir - and indeed the whole church - prides itself in continuing this ancient tradition that is part of our nation's cultural heritage.

St. Mary's is fortunate to have had a choral tradition, since its opening in 1877. One of the first organists was Rev J E Turner, who, along with R R Terry, organist of Westminster Cathedral, was largely responsible for the revival of Renaissance polyphonic music in England.

The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as sacred song united to the words, it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy.

Holy Scripture, indeed, has bestowed praise upon sacred song, and the same may be said of the fathers of the Church and of the Roman pontiffs who in recent times, led by St. Pius X, have explained more precisely the ministerial function supplied by sacred music in the service of the Lord. THE ADULT CHOIR

The Adult choir is called at to sing at numerous events in the Church. It regularly performs concerts, and sings an annual Messiah at Christmas, as well as other concert works. Its principal function is to sing at the 11am Sunday Sung High Mass, during term time, and other important dates in the liturgical year. The music used is drawn from many centuries and traditions. Much early music is sung, as well as Classical masses and motets, and more contemporary compositions. Plainsong, the cherished heritage of the Church is used weekly.

In the recent years, the choir have sung at St. Asaph Cathedral, Chester Cathedral and Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. More recently they have sung at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral during the Cathedral vacation as well as other venues for concerts. In the past the choir has recorded several times and has been heard on local, national and world-wide radio and television.

The choir rehearses on Thursday evenings. If you are interested in joining, and wish to arrange an informal audition, or more information, contact the Director of Music, Michael Wynne music@stmaryswarrington.org.uk

JUNIOR CHOIR

A recent exciting addition to the music department is the foundation of a Junior Choir. Open to boys and girls aged 6 and upwards, the choir provides a wonderful musical education: Training is given by professional musicians in all aspects of music and music theory. There is the opportunity for choristers to receive singing and piano lessons from a professional teacher, which could lead to Associated Board exams. There are also the associated skills that are learned by singing in a choir: the ability to concentrate for long periods; self-control and self-discipline; motivation; introduction to foreign languages and the understanding of great texts and great music. These are all things that will enhance a child's overall academic achievement.

In addition, there are parties, days out and fun trips, and there is the opportunity for the choristers to let off some steam after the Thursday rehearsal in the Choir Club.

Having a son or daughter who is a chorister is a considerable commitment for the whole family, but there are great rewards. For a start, the choir is a lively, enthusiastic and friendly group, which fosters a great sense of teamwork and celebrates its achievements.

Singing is for everybody. It is a natural and fun part of everyday life. Interests and skills nurtured at an early age are carried through school, university and beyond.

We are looking for new choristers from age 6 upwards who are keen to sing and eager to learn. Joining the choir is by invitation, following a short, informal audition. During the audition, we will consider the following key points:
* Musical and vocal potential
* Interest and enthusiasm
* Good reading skills

All choristers follow a carefully planned training pattern, resulting in a series of medals which can be worked towards, starting with the red ribbon, and after a few years the prestigious Gold Award.

To arrange an audition, or if you have any other questions about the choirs, please contact the Director of Music, Michael Wynne music@stmaryswarrington.org.uk
